Atchison Farmers MarketFresh, Friendly, LocalMarket E-Newsletter for Saturday, August 8, 2015 August is the official Kansas Farmers’ Market Month. Thank you for being our customers! Tell your friends about the fresh, local produce you buy from your friendly area farmers. Dixon and Reid, musicians who have been entertaining us at the market for years now, will be here today playing and singing folk music. Lois Reid is expecting her first grandchild this week. So if she doesn’t show up, Jim Dixon has promised that he will still be here. If you know of any musicians, or groups (i.e. 4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, or fundraisers for chairity) who might like to come to our market, have them call Betty Fischer at 913 709 5050 to arrange a date. Don’t forget to sign up with Janean Bowen (Lynn Hoffman, our market manager, is on vacation), for the September Bundle Give Away, which will take place on Saturday, September 5. She can also assist you if you need to use your credit, debit, or SNAP card at the market. We also accept Chamber of Commerce gift cards, Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons and coupons from the Atchison Community Health Clinic. And, of course, you may purchase Atchison Farmers’ Market gift certificates to give as gifts to your family and friends. If you are a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/food stamp) recipient, we invite you to double your buying power each market day with “Market Match.” For every $1 (up to $25 per market day) you swipe on your card, you will receive $2 worth of tokens to use at the market. (Example: swipe your card for $10 and get $20 of tokens to spend at the Market.) This is a wonderful way to buy fresh, local produce for your family. We also have many recipe cards available from Savor the Season. Easy Zucchini Soup Ingredients ½ c (one stick) butter 2 lbs zucchini, cut into chunks 2 cups chicken bouillon 1 tsp salt (if bouillon was not salted) 1 tsp curry powder Directions

  1. Melt butter in a pot over medium heat. Add zucchini, chicken broth, salt, and curry powder to the pot, cook until the zucchini is soft, about 15 minutes.

  2. Pour soup into a blender no more than half full. Cover and hold lid in place, pulse a few times before leaving on to blend. Puree in batches until smooth.
