Atchison Farmers MarketFresh, Friendly, LocalMarket E-Newsletter for Saturday, June 20, 20158 a.m. to Noon
The Atchison Farmers' Market has so much going this weekend! The first event is a big one: Tresa Carter and Helen Schnoes, from Douglas County, will be here at the opening of the market to launch Market Match. This program will enable the Atchison Market to double the tokens we give to a SNAP recipient, when they swipe their card to buy produce. They can match the amount they receive up to $25 each market day. We are very excited about this program and how it can help people get more, fresh, local produce.
Shawn Snoddy, of the Atchison Art Association, will have a program for children from 9 a.m. until noon. They will be doing Marbled Milk Painting.
Then, our very own Janean Bowen will be preparing kohlrabi using both sweet and savory recipes. You know, this is that strange looking round vegetable with leaves sprouting out of the sides! Kohlrabi is very delicious and grown by several of our vendors.
Three of our regular vendors will not be at Market this Saturday: Birdsong Farm, Long View Farm, and Providence Hill Farms. But you will have the opportunity to see them and buy produce from them at their own farms. They are on the Farm and Garden Tour, which runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday. You can get tickets at the Chamber of Commerce or Gateway to Kansas.
Lynn Hoffman, our market manager, has registration forms for the July Bundle Give Away. She can also assist you if you need to use your credit, debit, or SNAP card at the market. We also accept Chamber of Commerce gift cards and Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons. And, of course, you may purchase Atchison Farmers’ Market gift certificates to give as gifts to your family and friends. This would be a great Father’s Day gift.

2 cups chopped cabbage
4 kohlrabi bulbs, peeled and grated
2 stalks celery, sliced thinly
2 carrots, sliced thinly
2 Tb. minced fresh onion
1/3 c. white sugar
½ teasp. salt
1/8 teasp. ground black pepper
1/8 teasp. celery seed
½ c. mayonnaise
4 ½ teasp. apple cider vinegar
Directions
Toss the cabbage, kohlrabi, celery, carrot, and onion together in a large bowl.
